Well, this is a tough question to answer because the programs are quite different. Penn is arguably one of the best programs in the country and is very academic. Jackson Memorial is a community program, although it is a decent one as far as I know. For what it's worth, Penn is tough to beat in reputation, education, etc. but it all depends on what you're looking for. If you want to live in Miami and want a community program, Jackson might be "better" for you.

UM (Jackson) is not a community program. I think you are confusing it with the program in Orlando. UM Jackson is affiliated with the University of Miami School of Medicine. The teaching hospital is Jackson Memorial Hospital which is the only county hospital. It has a Level I trauma center. They take 7 residents a year. It is a large program with an outstanding faculty and great operative experience at all levels. I hear the residents are a very tight group and very happy to be in the program.

Tough choice b/n the two schools. Obviously, UPenn is very strong but speaking from experience so is the program down here in Miami. UM Jackson is a very very very busy program. The residents are top notch as well is the faculty. The New Chairman is very determined to keep the program ascending. IMO it is one of the top programs in the country...not to mention the city and weather (and uhh...chics). The best part about the place though is the residents. They sell the program....they are bright, well-rounded, and make time to hang out (go boating, to bars, etc.) Good luck with your choice. And, it is definitley not a community program...it is University Based.

Speaking of the chics at Miami, is it true that several of the nurses moonlight as strippers?

Miami is weak in joints. I currently work for the guy who used to do the joints for UM, and he has definetly kept the referal base. V. Burke, the joint guy at UM, should have more joints coming his way once he is done with the whole thing about the collection of cases for his Boards.
