Geisinger Medical Center is a 500+ bed hospital serving as the hub of a 10-hospital health care system in Central Pennsylvania and as a tertiary care center for referrals from hospitals outside of the Geisinger system. There is a growing need for surgeons who can assess painful hip and knee replacements and offer nonoperative and operative care to these patients, many of who find it difficult to travel to Philadelphia or Baltimore where this care has traditionally been available.
This fellowship has extensive experience in revision hip and knee arthroplasty, complex primary arthroplasty, and high-risk primary arthroplasty while also providing experience with innovations in primary arthroplasty like minimally invasive surgery and robotic arthroplasty surgery. This fellowship experience is ideal for young surgeons who will be expected to handle challenging cases at tertiary care centers or for surgeons who have previously completed adult reconstruction fellowships which did not satisfy the candidate in terms of the revision experience.
The adult reconstruction section consists of three fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeons who meet in a weekly preoperative conference. There is a robust didactic lecture series for the residents, cadaver lab, and time allotted for CME. The fellow would also participate in a monthly case review with Infectious Disease, Microbiology, and Pathology to review cases regarding periprosthetic infection.
The fellow would attend the Susquehanna Adult Reconstruction Society meeting in the Spring in which residents from 4 different residencies with an interest in adult reconstruction present their research to a visiting professor and other speakers.
The Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute is comprised of 80 physicians including 49 surgeons representing all of the subspecialties affording the adult reconstruction fellow the opportunity to also develop experience with hip preservation surgery including periacetabular osteotomies and hip arthroscopy.
While the research opportunities abound with dedicated research support personnel which serve the entire department, the amount of time dedicated to research can be tailored to the fellow’s interest. There is no call responsibility or role in Trauma call unless the fellow wishes to participate in trauma call to maintain proficiency.
Geisinger is located in Danville, PA which is 20 minutes from Bloomsburg and Bucknell Universities making the community a safe, family oriented diverse community which consists of hospital and university employees.
