Situated in in a beautiful metropolitan area of about 2-3 million in population, Primary Childrens Medical Center and Shrine provide pediatric care to Utah and the surrounding states. Utah has the highest national birth rate In the United States.
The fellowship is 6 months at Shriners and 6 months at Primary Children's Medical Center. It is an academic fellowship.
Fellowship Program Director: Marcella Woiczik.
There are 12 pediatric orthopaedic attendings.
There is a Shriners and and Level 1 trauma center (Primary Children's Hospital)
There is one research project required for the year.
They service Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, Arizona, parts of Texas and Shriners is endowed to fly special needs children from Mexico to Utah - so patient population is quite diverse.

Staff Surgeons
There are 12 attendings and every single one is genuinely excellent. They get along great and have been there forever. They give you a great deal of appropriate operative autonomy.
Didactics / Teaching
The conferences are so good that the residents don't even do AAOS or Miller review. We had Skaggs come from CHLA as guest professor. They do indications conference, peds conference, peds ortho didactic, and journal club.
Operating Experience
You mostly do trauma and bread and butter peds ortho the 6 months at Primary Children's and more exotic cases at Shrine. I saw case logs from the past 9 years of fellows and there were anwhere from 375 to 950 cases per year depending on how much spine the fellow wanted to do (spine is more codes but less cases) I probably did around 650 cases and loved about 1800 codes.
Clinic Experience
At Shrine you have a great deal of autonomy and you dictate and see patients independently. We got to operate so much at PCMC that I didn't go to much clinic, but they have a unique coaching type clinic experience where I learned a great deal. There isn't much clinic paperwork at PCMC to deal with and the MAs are great. Fracture clinic is huge and they will see up to 100-200 patients in the summer.
Research Opportunities
One project required for the year. They had research assistants who wrote my research proposals and IRBs and submitted the papers for me to journals. The current fellows were offered a variety of research projects that had already been IRB approved. My cofellow started around 10 projects. There is a biomechanics labs, residents are great and EMR makes retrospective studies like the one I did
Residents / Ancillary Staff
Residents are some of the best I have ever worked with. The residency director is a pediatric orthopod as well.
Lifestyle
They no longer have fellows taking any primary call as of 2015. You do backup call as a fellow (where the junior resident works up the cases and staffs them with the fellows) The fellow and attending decides if the fellows need to come in at night. You can also take optional Shrine call which was very light and paid very well.

SLC is beautiful and affordable.

Limitations
Now that primary call has been eliminated for fellows there are no major down sides to this program at all. Any issue I had was immediately addressed by Marcella Woiczik and Jaques D'Astous - the two fellowship directors while I was there. I think the kinks are all ironed out and this is one of, if not the, best pediatric orthopaedic fellowship in the country.
Overall Rotation Experience / Conclusion
I would rank at the top again for peds ortho fellowship.
They helped me get a great job.
They continue to provide support even after fellowship.
