Hi,

Complicated scenario, please help:

In a nutshell, I'm an Australian orthopaedic resident married to an american girl. I'm currently in a top-tier local Australian program but (largely to keep the wife happy) an interested in doing a fellowship in the US, and possibly in eventually practising in the US.

I've done the USMLE step 1 and 2 before getting into orthopaedics in Australia but havent done Step 3 as I hadnt seen the point when I got onto ortho in Aus.

What would i need to get a fellowship and/or unrestricted license as an australian orthopaedic surgeon.
Would it help to do the USMLE step 3?
Would i be able to do the american board exam to demonstrate my competency?
Is there a period of "supervised" practise for overseas trained surgeons?

Can someone with experience/insight into this talk me through what would be required to be able to practise in the US?

Coming from a really good orthopaedic training program I dont want to re-do a residency program!

Cheers.

Hi,

Re-doing residency may be inevitable...an FMG is an FMG.
