Dr. Levine,

In your opinion, what is the proper etiquette for sending thank you letters after an interview? Should they be hand written, typed, or emailed? Do you really think they are necessary or do interviewers not really care either way?

Thank you.

We categorically tell our applicants to not send thank you letters because at the end of the interview day our rank list is finalized and we're done with the whole process. Despite this suggestion, everyone sends thank you notes - it's certainly courteous to do so but I wouldn't fret about it and worry about type written, hand-written, etc... Whatever you're comfortable with is fine.

However, as we have discussed on this site in the past, under no circumstances should you feel compelled to tell any program where you are ranking them. If you choose to do so, then remember you can only tell 1 program that you are ranking them #1 - do not use this phrase unless you're absolutely certain of it. We've seen situations where a student tells 1 program they're being ranked #1 and then go to a different interview and feel conflicted and want to change. Avoid this at all costs!

good luck
