Does size matter? was created by chondrocyte
I am currently a MS3 interested in ortho since I was an undergrad in college. I have a good step 1 score (240s). I've done some ortho research in college and after college with some ortho research publications. Probably not AOA. According to my dean, I look good on paper however she is concern about my size. I am about 5'1" and 120lbs. She feels that this will hurt me when I start interviewing. I was wondering if this is true? Will I get turned down by residency programs because of my size?

Honestly, it probably won't be that big of a deal. I'm just finishing up interview season and I see a TON of female applicants of all shapes and sizes (and the same goes for the males).

I think where you'll probably be most frustrated is on actual surgery days if you're with a very tall person - but that's what stools/steps are for. Anyway, bottom line: don't worry about that - control what you can control and the rest will fall into place. Good luck!

Doesn't matter at all. One of our best recent residents was female and slight. Once she was asked: "What will you do if you have a tough fracture to reduce?" and she responded: "I'll hire a PA". 'nuff said.

Better not give that answer on interview day.
