Due to some unfortunate circumstances (Labrum surgery requiring me to be in a sling for 6 weeks + Physical Therapy for 3 months), my dean suggested its best for me not to start my surgery rotation.
So I opted to take some time off between MS2 and MS3. Although I have "time off," I want to use at as wisely as possible. I really love Ortho and matching to a decent Residency would be a dream come true for me.

Stats:
-3.42 GPA
-Step 1: 242
-Reputation of School: Not a top ranked school. I think its ranked around 90-100
I am a bit worried after reading some people's stats. Lots of very high board scores and top tier medical schools.

I will be speaking with my Dean next week about how to go about taking part in Research. I'm sure published research would look great on any application. I am unsure who to contact or where to look for research opportunities.
Also, is there anything else I could do with my time to better my chances?

Anyone have good leads on research opportunities in the NJ/NY area?

I would appreciate any tips/advice. Thanks a lot!
