So here is my deal. I'm an OMS-II that has to remediate b/c I failed my OPP written component examination this past fall. I finished the class with a 76,but b/c I failed my remediation exam (i was really sick, but figured I could pass), I'm sitting back home. Additionally, I failed my respiratory system.....1 pt. I got a bit ambitious with the board studying at that time given I breezed through the 1st few systems of 2nd year. I'm following the rest of the semester via online lectures, studying board material and working on all my deficiencies. What should I do? What COMLEX score could offset my new found "5 yr" plan. I was so close to rotations and boards, yet now I'm a year behind and its sucks.
Albeit, I don't know anything about DO, I would highly recommend speaking with a DO program chair. It is tough to get into ortho as a DO even as a superior student, so this is just going to make things more difficult. If you are serious about ortho, I would find an advisor at a DO ortho program, stat.
You'll have to rock the COMLEX I for sure and not just get ortho average, but probably mid 600's or somewhere in that range.
When you do your away rotations and this will be your best chance to match DO obviously you'll want to dominate them as well, and then broach the subject as a learning lesson, what happened, and focus on the improvement, etc that you've made since the setback.
The deficiency will be noted for sure on your dean's letter and transcript, but up to that point when ERAS is released to all the places you are applying to, hopefully you will have addressed it already with those places you have rotated at, and it will be a non-issue.
lion 2013...... you still have options so try not to worry too much. i know of a few people who have failed the boards twice and still got a spot. i also know of a student who failed a couple classes but did well on boards and got a spot also. all of them knew their shit when it came to ortho and worked hard so the other stuff was overlooked. pm me if you want to hear more.
