I am a third year student looking to apply ortho next year. I have done pretty well so far during 3rd year. COMLEX score was 655 (97%). However, my class rank is terrible, 168/222. My GPA is not bad, in the mid B range, never failed any class. Earned mostly Bs, quite a few As along with seldom Cs; however, I am in the bottom 3rd of my class.
From what I have heard and seen, most of the programs have board score requirements (e.g 600+) and many will reject you if you don't make the cut. My question is are they screening applicants based off of pre-clinical grades as well? If so, am I out of luck? Can any current resident or attendings comment on how much class rank comes into play when ranking candidates, and whether there are programs who will write off an applicant solely for low class rank? Just want to gauge which programs to rotate at and which programs to avoid. I've tried calling program coordinators and they usually only talk about board score requirements.
