DO residency with an MD fellowship? was created by cbtk18
I rotated with a doc who went this route---albeit 20+ years ago. Is this difficult to accomplish? these days?

Nope not hard. There are certain fellowships that are more popular/competative; however, DOs are at Mayo, Cleveland Clinic, Andrews Sports med, ect...so basically you can go where ever your heart desires as long as you work hard.

The AOA president recently (11/11/11) sent an email about 2 policy changes that the ACGME has proposed. One of them would prevent an AOA trained ortho surgeon from doing a ACGME fellowship. The following is an excerpt of the email:

As an osteopathic medical student, you may be aware that ACGME recently proposed two new policies that would limit future DOs from being able to train in ACGME programs. They include]Requiring an ACGME-accredited residency program or RCPSC-accredited residency program in Canada as a prerequisite for clinical education for entry into an ACGME-accredited fellowship program[/b]

(This would limit a DO who completed an AOA-accredited internship from proceeding to an ACGME program unless they repeated their internship year in an ACGME-accredited residency program.)

After speaking with a few programs, many of the ACGME fellowship programs are upset at this notion and it appears that the language will change to allow DO graduates to continue pursuing ACGME fellowships. Apparently, they wanted to restrict FMGs not DOs
