I wasn't intending to answer my own question when I posted but . . . I just got some great info from the folks at FREIDA. There are currently 10 DO's in non-military MD programs. Additionally, there are 12 DO's in military programs. If anyone wants the specific list, I can FWD the e-mail or just post it here. Too late tonight!

As a student that will be graduating from MCG in May and also matched in ortho, I can attest to the fact that their program is very DO friendly. Up until November of this year, the Chair of the program, Dr. Young, was a DO. We now have a new chairmen but I believe Dr Young is still influential. There are DO's at the 2nd year level and they just matched a DO from Ohio. However both of these individuals did do away rotations at MCG. If you are interested I think it would be worth doing a rotation there. Hope this helps and Good Luck.

By no means am I am expert but if FMGs on occasion match into allo ortho residencies, I'm damn sure a DO can.

What I think you need to do:

1. Ace the boards (240 plus on Step 1).

2. Publish 2 or more high-quality ortho papers.

3. Get the patronage of an influential orthopod at a local hospital/medical college.

Is it difficult to get an allo residency for a DO seeking ortho? Maybe. Impossible or unlikely? No way, you decide that.

Good luck.

Replied by on topic SLU has a DO on
SLU has a DO on faculty (Dr. Karges). Does that mean anything for you? Probably not. But it might be worth the money to send in an application.

I think in general most program directors are just looking for the best "fit" residents among those that they believe are smart enough and hardworking enough to handle the workload and be competent. If you demonstrate that you are competent via the few tangible and objective means available (board scores, grades, rec letters particularly if you get one or two from well known md's, performance on visiting rotations, and published research) then I don't think the perceived bias against DOs should keep you from matching. But then again I might just be naive. Good luck.
