Updated

The University of Virginia Orthopaedic Surgery Department is accepting applications for a Research Fellowship position for 2023-2024. The goal of the research fellowship is to mentor senior medical students interested in orthopaedic surgery.

Interested research fellows will have the following minimum expectations:

  • Work full-time (40 hours/week) with effort split between the Adult Reconstruction and Trauma divisions.
  • Participate in the planning, protocol development, IRB approval, data collection, data analysis, manuscript preparation, manuscript and abstract submission of prospective and retrospective clinical research.
  • Assist with ongoing clinical trials.
  • Assist maintaining and supporting current research projects.

The research fellow will be supervised by Drs. Michael Hadeed and Ian Duensing, and will have the opportunity to take part in educational activities available through the department, such as daily resident conferences and journal clubs. Fellows will also have the opportunity to shadow in the clinic and operating room, and gain valuable clinical experience. Applicants with experience in statistics (running, managing, interpreting) are preferred, and given further consideration; however, this experience is not mandatory.

Duration: 1 year starting mid-June 2023, but some flexibility in start date is possible.
Stipend: $30,000 per year (This is the total funding for the fellowship, and the stipend could be lower if the selected candidate opts to obtain health insurance from UVA, as the annual insurance cost will be deducted from the funding available. The cost of UVA's insurance is approximately $6,000 per year. If the selected applicant provides their own insurance, they must provide proof of insurance coverage per UVA requirements.)

Minimum Requirements
Education: Bachelor's degree with current enrollment in medical school (preferred to be between 3rd and 4th years or just after graduation)
Experience: Prior research experience is preferred. Experience in statistics is also preferred.
Licensure: None

We are unable to sponsor visas for foreign medical graduates at this time
