Dr. Brian Cole is seeking an ambitious medical student (between Third and Fourth Year) who is interested in pursuing a year-long clinical research fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. Dr. Cole is the Associate Chairman and Professor in the Department of Orthopedics at Rush University Medical Center, and works with the renowned Division of Sports Medicine. As the section head of the Cartilage Restoration Center, Dr. Brian J. Cole, along with Dr. Adam B. Yanke (co-Director), are both leaders in developing innovative biologic methods for addressing early cartilage damage in the knee, shoulder, elbow, foot, ankle and hip. This unique position will allow the research fellows to work closely with residents, fellows, and faculty at Rush. The research coordinator will also have extensive opportunities for publication and presentation of research at various conferences.

The research coordinator will work very closely with the research coordinators for the other sports medicine attendings and be responsible for duties including:
  • =12.0pt Coordination of all research projects including both clinical and basic science studies
  • =12.0pt Submission of protocols and updates to the Institutional Review Board (IRB)
  • =12.0pt Consenting patients for studies and performing pre-operative physical exams
  • =12.0pt Collection of intra-operative data as well as following up with patients in clinic
  • =12.0pt Collection and processing of patient samples
  • =12.0pt Dissection/testing of cadaveric specimens for research purposes
  • =12.0pt Statistical analysis of data
  • =12.0pt Drafting/editing of sports medicine/orthopaedic surgery manuscripts, abstracts, and book chapters
  • =12.0pt Presenting research updates as weekly meetings with the sports medicine attendings
  • =12.0pt Grant writing
  • =12.0ptSpecific prerequisites and characteristics of the coordinators should include:
=12.0ptPrerequisites for the position include:
  • =12.0pt Strong motivation for a career in orthopaedic surgery
  • =12.0pt Evident interest in research
  • =12.0pt Strong academic record
  • =12.0pt MUST be extremely organized and detail oriented
  • =12.0pt MUST be able to self-manage and work independently
  • =12.0pt MUST be able to work efficiently with clinical staff
  • =12.0ptExperience with statistical analysis or coding is a plus
