2026-27 Spine Surgery Research Fellowship at Brown University
Dr. Bryce Basques invites 3rd and 4th year US medical students interested in orthopaedic surgery to apply for a one-year spine surgery research fellowship at Brown University. Competitive candidates are willing to take a year off between their 3rd and 4th year and who demonstrate a strong interest in orthopaedics and an outstanding work ethic.
Position: Spine Surgery Research Fellow
Duration: 1 year
Start Date: May 2025
Compensation: Monthly stipend + conference registration/travel
Location: Brown University, Providence, RI, USA
Responsibilities:
- Manage multiple research projects, organize and maintain all aspects of the projects
- Organize and present ongoing research updates at weekly meetings
- Statistical analysis of data
- Create and submit protocols to the Institutional Review Board (IRB)
- Assist in preparation of PowerPoint presentations, website educational material
- Opportunity to lead studies with other junior medical students/research assistants
Requirements:
- MS3 or MS4 students with a planned career in orthopaedic surgery
- US applicants only (We do not provide visas)
- Prior research experience preferred; familiarity with basic statistical analysis is a plus
- Organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple deadlines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Able to work well in a team setting and to take initiative independently
- Ethical, reliable, and highly motivated with an excellent work ethic
Goals/Opportunities of the Fellowship:
- Participate in a high volume spine surgery research setting with opportunities for 15+ peer-reviewed publications, including first-author projects directly related to your contributions
- 15+ conference presentations, and chapters
- Robust experience in study design, data collection and analysis (PearlDiver, SPSS/R), manuscript preparation, and abstract submission.
- Close collaboration with orthopaedic residents, fellows, and attending spine surgeons at Brown
- Opportunities to observe surgical procedures and/or spend time in clinic
- Chance to join in Orthopaedic Grand Rounds and Journal Clubs
- Opportunities and support to present research at Orthopaedic/Spine Conferences
- Strong mentorship and support throughout the orthopaedic surgery application process, including feedback on personal statements, CVs, and interview preparation
