Hi everyone. I'm new to this site, but I just want to say thanks for all of the help you've given me so far. Anyway, I'm also new to the world of ortho, and I'm not sure about my overall competitiveness for the top tier programs as well as overall. So here's my CV (basically),and I'd appreciate any words of wisdom. I'm a MS3 at a small state school. My grades are excellent (both pre-clincial and clinical) and my step 1 score is 247. I have multiple awards (not yet sure about Junior AOA, but hopeful) and many extracurricular activities. However, I have NO RESEARCH, except what little I did in undergrad (not published). I'm going to try and do some case reports in the next few months, but I know they are not as highly regarded as research. Anyway, I'd appreciate your comments/advice. If anybody knows of specific programs that wouldn't frown on this total lack of research, please let me know. Also, I'm not against doing research (and would like to do some in residency), but I'm pretty sure that I want to do a fellowship (prob hand) and don't want to do academic medicine after I'm done.

Thanks again for any advice you can provide, and good luck to y'all on your matches, careers, etc.

Dracer: get ready cause you're going to be accused of being a "tool" soon !

You're in great shape...you're competitive for any program. Get great letters and don't make an @#$ of yourself at the interview and you should be fine.

Thanks for the advice Orthostud. My intent was not to be a tool. It's just that I feel like coming out of a small state school and a total lack of research are pretty big strikes against me, epsecially based on some of the previous threads. Oh well, "Sticks and stones..."

Reply | Edit | Del you have pretty good credentials
I don't think the lack of research is going to hurt you...although some people know ahead of time they want to do ortho and do research since first year, this is not common...and if you have great credentials (and you do), it's not a strike against you. I think step 1 scores, performance on aways and your interview are most important. Your awards will help you stand out during interviews as well.

I do think the med school you go to is a factor. if you go to one of the top med schools, your chances increase dramatically, especially at brand-name programs. Don't be surprised if you get rejected from a couple of these programs, because they like their own, and you may get axed in favor of someone who goes to one of these schools (even if they don't have your credentials). But again, you've got the board scores and grades to hopefully overcome this, especially if you get junior aoa.

But you're in pretty good shape. I recommend doing aways ANYWHERE you'd want to go. You've got the scores to match at any program in the country...so do 2 aways at top programs, work your butt off, and you'll likely match at one of them. Of course your personality is a huge factor and if they don't like you you're screwed.

NYPR,

Although most of us are fresh out of the trenches (interviewing), one fact remains. . . . . .none of us have matched any where yet. You should seek out your Ortho advisor/mentor at your home program. They'll be the best source of info on whether you're gonna be competitive or not. I did that at the beginning of third year after I got my board scores back. It was a pretty helpful meeting. But all in all, you do seem to be very competitive. Don't worry about the research.
