Kettering Health is excited to announce a collaboration with Orthopedic Associates of SW Ohio and to invite ambitious individuals to enhance their residency application and further develop their foundation in clinical research. Fourth-year unmatched medical students and matriculated medical students (DO/MD applicants only) with an interest in orthopedic surgery are encouraged to apply for a funded clinical research fellowship in Dayton, Ohio.

This opportunity will allow applicants to strengthen their application for the Orthopedic Surgery Match. Fellows will expect to work on numerous projects with several investigators.
 Position: Orthopedic Research FellowDuration: 12 months (July 2024 – July 2025; start and end dates are flexible)Location: Kettering Health Campuses, Dayton, OHSalary: 1099-Contract with biweekly stipend ($800/week or $1,600/biweekly or $3200/month @ $38,400/year) The goal of the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program at Kettering Health is to develop competent, caring, well-rounded, practice-ready orthopedic surgeons. We focus on providing evidence-based high-quality treatment, and the orthopedic residents are involved in the coordination and delivery of that care during the course of their educational experience. Residents are instructed by a host of dedicated general and fellowship-trained orthopedic clinical faculty, many of whom practice with Orthopedic Associates of SW Ohio. The orthopedic research fellow will collaborate closely with the clinical faculty and orthopedic residents as an orthopedic research fellow. In all aspects of the orthopedic specialty, research fellows will be pioneers in the coordination and execution of clinical orthopedic research investigating a broad scope of general and subspecialty orthopedic surgery. The research fellow will have the opportunity to collaborate with clinical faculty whose interests are similar to their own, as well as a wide set of subspecialty orthopedic surgeons. The research fellow is strongly encouraged to attend didactics, journal clubs, specialty labs, and residency outings. The research fellow is also available to continue building their knowledge of orthopedics by attending resident and attending led clinics.  Previous experience in academic or clinical research, particularly with previous peer-reviewed publications, would be preferred but is not required to apply. In addition to the experience gained in the field of clinical orthopedic research, the orthopedic research fellow can expect to improve their residency application with robust exposure to clinical orthopedics and orthopedic surgery, further develop research skills that will be important in their medical career, network with orthopedic faculty and residents, and potentially showcase their own technical skills. The experience will be invaluable to their pursuit of a career in orthopedic surgery. 

Research Fellow Responsibilities: Work with industry to set up cadaver workshops for orthopedic implants and researchWork alongside orthopedic residents and faculty, organizing bi-monthly research meetings and overseeing all department clinical research projects create and evaluate clinical research questions, coordinate relevant literature reviews, and plan clinical studies prepare manuscripts, posters, and oral presentations related to orthopedic clinical research opportunity to attend all relevant conferences, including preparation of research abstracts, posters, and presentations (registration and expenses covered for activities related to research presentations at academic and clinical meetings across the country)Coordinate and assist the summer orthopedic medical student interns Educate patients and enroll them in research studies (may involve calling and coordinating follow-up with patients)Some studies necessitate clinic attendance and physical exams, as well as the use of specific equipmentCollaborate with the hospital clinical research team, the EMR clarity team, and the IRB to ensure appropriate research oversight/integrity and patient safetyCollect, arrange, and analyze clinical data maintain and develop relationships with industry partners to support research efforts Collaborate closely with Dr. Brent Bamberger, the orthopedic surgery residency program director, and clinical orthopedic faculty.
