Lab Website: orthopaedics.med.brown.edu/research/labo...own-orthopedic-spineAbout the RoleThe Brown Orthopedic Spine Research Team is offering a highly competitive summer research fellowship for rising second-year medical students (M2s) who have a strong interest in orthopedic surgery and clinical research. This unpaid, full-time, in-person position provides an immersive opportunity to work alongside full-time research fellows and orthopedic faculty mentors at University Orthopaedics.Fellows will play a critical role in assisting research fellows with ongoing projects, helping bring studies to completion, and developing an independent clinical research project from idea to submission. This fellowship is ideal for students considering a career in orthopedic surgery, offering unparalleled networking opportunities, hands-on research experience, and early exposure to the field.Key ResponsibilitiesResearch Support & Project Completion
  • Assist full-time research fellows in ongoing spinal surgery and orthopedic research projects.
  • Conduct literature reviews, manage research databases, and ensure accurate data entry.
  • Perform data collection and statistical analysis for clinical outcomes research.
  • Support manuscript and abstract preparation, contributing to publications and conference presentations.
Independent Research Project Development
  • Develop an independent clinical research project from concept to submission.
  • Gain experience in study design, IRB submission, data analysis, and manuscript writing.
  • Work towards submitting research to national orthopedic conferences and peer-reviewed journals.
Networking & Professional Development
  • Work directly with orthopedic spine faculty and research fellows.
  • Attend weekly lab meetings and research discussions.
  • Gain exposure to orthopedic surgeons and potential shadowing opportunities.
Eligibility & Qualifications
  • Current first-year medical student (M1) at an accredited U.S. medical school (Rising M2 for Summer 2025).
  • Demonstrated strong interest in orthopedic surgery and research.
  • Ability to commit full-time, in-person (Monday-Friday) for the entire summer (June-August 2025).
  • Exceptional work ethic, organizational skills, and ability to work independently.
  • Previous research experience is preferred but not required.
