I have just recently decided to pursue orthopaedics. I have solid scores and good grades, but little else as far as ortho research, or ortho experience. Unfortunately, my school doesn't allow electives until September, so I will be behind there as well. Any advice for things I can do over the next 6-8 months, while finishing my required clerkships, to boost my chances?

if you have solid grades and scores, then it doesn't matter. Go talk to your chairman and express your interest in ortho. If you cannot do any electives until septemer...that's fine. Do an ortho elective in september at a place where you can get 2 letters in 1 month. then do one in october and one in november...there are people i know who did electives as late as december/january! for now, there's not much you can do cause it's hard to find the time to do research 3rd year and the best thing you can do for yourself is to get honors in your classes right now.

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, my program has an interim chairmen that is unwilling to meet with 3rd years, so I have to wait to talk with him until I do my elective in September.

I am planning a trip this spring to check out some of the cities that interest me. Would it be wise to try to arrange meetings with program directors when I am there, or would that be considered sucking up? I wouldn't mind having them see my face and know I am interested in their program before they receive my ERAS app, but I don't want to come off as a suck up.

I don't know of anyone who did that. I don't think it's necessary...the electives you do should be enough for them to get to know you.

I guess it couldn't hurt...I don't know how many program directors would be willing (or have time) to meet with an applicant who's not from the home school...but I really don't know. I say enjoy your vacation and check out the city...the real work is ahead of you when you do your elective. It's really not necessary I don't think.
