Did anyone out there rotate at these places? If so, could you tell me the low down (what the city is like, the program specifics, life out of residency, call, etc.) If you interviewed, could you please describe the process, competitiveness and any other info. I am not AOA, all third yr. honors, average boards, will have great letters and some research. Any other program suggestions for my stats would be appreciated.
Thanks

overall a good program. Interview was basically like most other places (~4-6 people) and very mellow. They have a nice overall schedule that is front loaded call wise (Q3 all pgy2, but then Q5-6 after, i dont remember the details now) kc is also a pretty good place to live. Plus it beats the h$%& out of the other kc program (UMKC). at least the chairman here does not insult and threaten you......

Bonedoc, did you happen to interview at the UK-Wichita campus also? If so, would you provide some details on that program?

yeah i interviewed there also. It was one of the places that really took me by surprise. They have a great lifestyle, are more of a community than academic place (only the chairman is actually a KU employee, they work with 30 or so private guys). They do 6 (or is it 9, i forget now) months of peds in pgy4 in st louis at the shriners hospital, which is a great experience (wash u residents also go there). There are two level one trauma centers that they work at so i think that the trauma experience is good, since wichita is over 300,000 and is the only thing for a long ways in any direction (therefore lots of referrals/transfers). The residents here seems very nice and laid back. I went in not knowing what to expect and came out impressed. I did some exploring around wichita, and it is not that bad, but a lot of the places i am looking at are in mid/smal cities. Housing is very cheap, I think everyone who wanted a house (not all single people do) had no problem with getting one (unless they used to work for enron.....) As for rotators, I dont know since i did not do a rotation there. I know that some of the KUmed class does 3rd and 4th year there. I got the feeling that there is a strong midwest bias too, since all the interviewees nametags were from, KS, MO, OK, TX, IL, etc, etc

I also interviewed at Wichita and liked the program. I agree with the extreme bias given towards KU students. When the program listed the schools the current residents were from, 1/2 - 3/4 of the residents were from KU. Apparently, this will end since there has been a change in the chairman. O/W, Wichita is a great place to train and I would definitely consider a rotation there.

As far as charleston, I think you could use your rotation more wisely at another program. Their program completely fell apart a couple of years ago, although they are rebuilding and it looks promising in the next few years, I personally dont want to be apart of that instability. Hope this helps
