I may be interested in pursuing a career in spine and right now Sinai doesn't have a spine surgeon. Does any one know if they will have one in the future?

they are supposedly adding a spine guy by this fall/spring. i would definitely follow up and make sure that it happens. besides spine right now, that program is awesome!!

What? What? What?

What order do you guys think Sinai, HJD, and Columbia go in with regards to reputation, training, life, etc?

What? What? What?

i think the order is

1.hjd- program is without a weakness,
2.lennox hill- awesome prog, good lifestyle
3. mt sinai- great program but no spine and not in the same boat as hjd, maybe sinai and lennox battle it out for 2nd
4.a distant 4 is columbia

For what it's worth, I completely agree with bmp2002.

i would put sinai over lenox hill because you don't have to travel out of the city to do rotations (ie. peds, trauma). once sinai gets a spine guy (which i am sure they will soon), they will be ahead of lenox hill hands down. also, i couldn't train at a place that only takes 2/yr.

I agree with the order that was mentioned before.

However, when i was interviewing at Sinai, the faculty did not appear to be in any rush to recruit a new spine person (based on their answer to my question regarding time frame for a spine doc). In addition, I don't think a resident will have enough spine experience if that is only based on 1 spine person.

I also think that LIJ is a solid program and that it should be ranked with the number 2 spots.

what's the overall feeling on the sinai program?

good, bad, average?

i know they have a good lifestyle there, but have you guys heard about the training and the fellowships?

i think that it is very good. they get great fellowships and they have high power academic attendings (springfield, flatow, etc..). after rotating there, i think that you couldn't go wrong with the place. then again, i really don't like spine!! your trauma is out at elmhurst in queens. while on in-house call at sinai, you are covering a level 3 trauma center!! maybe an old lady that slipped in the shower every once in a while, but definitely manageable! seems like the painful years are frontloaded in this program. once you are done with pgy3, you are sailing.

thanks for the input ortho2002.

since you rotated there, do you know if the lifestyle for the residents is good or is it pretty malignant.

also, is the operative experience adequate and are the residents happy?

thanks.

they are as non-malignant as a program on the east coast can be! the residents have fun and get along well with the other residents and attendings. also, they are on a first name basis with attendings. it is a great learning environment! they also do a good number of cases. you will be doing total joints as a pgy2 and their chiefs are technically very proficient.
