Southern California - Riverside County - The Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Anesthesiology at Riverside University Health System is searching for a motivated 3rd year medical student, or an unmatched 4th year medical student with a budding interest in orthopedics, anesthesia and clinical research. 

Over a minimum 1 year commitment the Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) will work closely with Attending Physicians and residents to assist a rapidly growing orthopedic surgery and anesthesia research portfolio. The CRC is expected to perform all core CRC responsibilities for human subjects’ research including but is not limited to planning, drafting, IRB submission, patient recruitment, data collection and analysis. The CRC may also be responsible for development of source documents and/or case report forms and coordination of research/project team meetings. The qualified applicant will also have many opportunities to join and co-author scholarly projects that they significantly contribute to.

The research coordinator is also encouraged to participate in educational activities held by the hospital and within the departments, consisting of continued education lectures, weekly radiologic conferences, journal clubs, and more. The qualified applicant will have opportunities to shadow attending and resident physicians in clinic and in the OR.

 The research assistant will have the chance to aid attending physicians in completing research projects, contributing to publications, and presenting research findings at various conferences. Position Details:

 Prerequisites for the position include:

  • Availability to start on campus within the specified timeframe
  • Completion of the third year of medical school before the start date 
  • Strong desire for a career in Orthopaedic surgery and/or Anesthesiology
  • Demonstrated interest in research with a solid academic record
  • Exceptional organizational and detail-oriented skills
  • Effective communication abilities
  • Ability to self-manage and work independently
  • Capability to work efficiently with clinical staff and interdisciplinary teams



Research responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating research projects led by principal investigators
  • Obtaining patient consent for studies, conducting follow-ups, and administering research-related forms and exams
  • Entering data into electronic medical record (EMR) platforms and uploading research documents
  • Enrolling patients in the research database and maintaining lists of surgical research cases
  • Submitting protocols to the Institutional Review Board (IRB)
  • Drafting, editing, and producing Orthopaedic and Anesthesia manuscripts and abstracts, as well as preparing posters and presentations for conferences
  • Collaborating and coordinating projects with attending physicians, fellows, residents, and other research personnel
