Reply | Edit | Del All Third Year rotation order?
I would appreciate any comments about 3rd year rotation order, i.e what's good, what's bad, how much does it matter, etc. I've heard various things from various people thus far and what people have said is as varied as can be. Thanks

Dude,

May vary by school. Personally, I did internal medicine first. IM is a base for every thing else, no matter what it is. that can't be said for any other specialty. After that we couldn't decide our order, but I got the luck of the draw and got my General surg block next. Ideal, because you get the two "big guns" out of the way early. And I had G-surg early enough that I wouldn't be burned out. I was still excited and hungry and I was able to shine. Plus, you get to see if the "surgery" lifestyle fits you before you go and schedule 2 or 3 ortho A.I.'s. You wouldn't have that luxury if you did surg last. Then I had psych, neuro surg, pediatrics, and ob/gyn. It was nice ending with ob/gyn because I was burned out, and I didn't care how I did in it. this schedule worked for me.

My opinion, in retrospect, is that it doesn't matter all that much. However, I'd recommend a few small things:
its a good idea to have obgyn and peds before family medicine, since you'll see a lot of peds and ob on the family med shelf exam.
You might want to do medicine before psych--you'll appreciate psych more.
I did medicine before surgery, and it was very helpful when managing patients on the floor and for taking the shelf exam.
I did OBgyn before surgery, so that I would have some experience in the OR before doing surgery--it makes you look better and feel more confident during the surgery rotation.
Aside from those considerations, if you're not a RSV snotty nose kid fan, peds may be more tolerable in the spring or summer.

hope this helps--good luck

I definately recommend doing Internal Medicine first if you can because it's a great basis for the rest of your rotations and you'll do much better on the sugery shelf exam if you've had medicine first. I did surgery next and rocked it and was able to understand the medicine issues that the pt had. I also agree about doing family before peds and ob so you get some experience with children and pregnant women. Good luck in 3rd year...it's awesome compared to sitting on your @#$ all day and studying for boards in 2nd year.

I recommend doing medicine 2nd or 3rd. Usually on the very first rotation attendings are more focused on trying to get the medical students comfortable with doing medical interviews and physicals. If you do IM 2nd or 3rd you may get more out of the rotation since you will be more comfortable with those issues. However, I am in total agreement in doing surgery after IM.
