Working in Europe

I posted this on the job opportunities board but this seems to be the only forum that anyone looks at so I'll copy it here.

I am just starting my residency, so this may be a bit premature; but I want information on opportunities for american-trained orthopedic surgeons in Europe. My wife and I would like to spend considerable time in Europe following my graduation from residency. Can anyone out there point me towards information about Americans practicing in Europe (UK, France, Germany)?

Thanks to anyone whose heard anything about this.
why would you want to go through all this and then make less than an auto mechanic (in france, for example)?? i am not all about money, but i want to pay off my debt at some point when i am still living!

that is one of the pieces of information that I'm looking for (salaries). I have no idea what anybody makes, how much they work, etc etc. I just know that the time I've spent in Europe was wonderful and that it would be nice to spend more time there immersed in a culture different from my own. If I find out that I'll make 30 grand a year as an orthopod then I wouldn't go. But if I would make 120k, then I would consider spending a year there and coming back stateside later. Anybody know how I can find reliable info on such things?

probably look for some physician exchange program through the AMA. i just happened to bump into an american physician when i was in paris a few years ago. he was there visiting on one of these exchange programs and was my source of making less than an auto mechanic. however, auto mechanics in france are not living in poverty! if you try and find one of these programs, i bet they can hook you up with someone's e-mail address that you can ask questions.

If you are up for it, you could join the military, not worry about malpractice insurance, serve your country, and have the opportunity to work in Germany (Army), Italy (Navy) or Spain (Navy) as an orthopod (Don't know what the Air Force offers in Europe). Of course, though, if all you want out of it is to have the opportunity to work in Europe, I don't recommend it; there are many other factors you would need to consider, and you may not be happy with some assignments
