Overview

We are seeking a highly talented and self-motivated research assistant with experience in data science and machine learning/artificial intelligence to join our research team under Dr. Ayoosh Pareek consisting of surgeons/sports physicians/radiologists who work at top U.S. medical centers. If you are passionate about AI in medicine - particularly computer vision, self-supervised learning, generative AI and enjoy experimenting with innovative ideas, we invite you to join our dynamic team. 


A stipend is provided. Applications are considered on a rolling basis. This posting is for a two-year term.

Who can apply?
  • Medical students and non-medical students interested in healthcare AI research
  • Researchers with technical expertise (especially with regards to deep learning in medicine)
  • Exceptional international applicants will be considered
You are someone technical who is good at/familiar with:
  • Building, debugging, and training SOTA deep learning models quickly
  • Reproducing and improving upon the DL research papers related to the projects
  • Working with real world and complicated healthcare datasets to organize and clean the data
  • Building flexible machine learning infrastructure / codebases to allow for experimenting with various ideas quickly for each project
  • Building a simple UI front-end using frameworks like Streamlit, Gradio, etc. allowing for easy access to the final models and pipelines.


Qualifications:
  • Strong Python programming skills (can confidently code in frameworks like Numpy, Pandas, Matplotlib, ScikitLearn)
  • 3+ years of experience with PyTorch (PyTorch Lightning, MONAI, FastAI), developing and training deep learning models, mostly for computer vision applications
  • Experience working with medical datasets in computer vision (X-rays, CT scans, MRIs)
  • Experience working with MONAI platform/another platform for developing DL models on medical data
  • Familiarity with segmentation software
  • Experience studying AI in medicine research papers and reproducing their results
  • Experience with GPU providing cloud services and working with virtual machines
  • Experience working with ML experiment tracking tools like W&B, MLFlow, etc.
  • Having a continuous learning mindset and willingness to experiment with new ideas
  • Being self-motivated and showing a strong sense of commitment and ownership to the assigned projects
Nice to have:
  • Experience working with 3D data
  • Experience with MLOps tools
  • Manuscript preparation experience
  • Grant writing experience
Other opportunities:
  • Shadow clinicians in the clinic setting or work with them in other capacities (operating room)
  • Work with other physicians/surgeons/radiologists at Hospital for Special Surgery
  • Work with the digital health team at Hospital for Special Surgery
  • Flexibility to work on multiple projects (not only the ones focused on machine learning)
