Advice externships at Campbell Clinic ??

I rotated there last October. Advice . . . according to many of the residents, you don't really have to take that much call. One resident told me he took one night, others two. I think I took 3-4 the whole month I was there. You want to take call with the 2 chiefs that are actually on the admissions committee. Ask around and you'll find out who they are.

As for what to do there? Ummm, don't really know. I did 4, one week rotations and didn't really get asked all that much stuff. It was weird. Also since you don't take much call, I got to work out pretty much everyday. Tell Dr. Azar that you really want to go there and you may get an interview even with suboptimal numbers . . . I know one guy from UT-Southwestern who did just that.

I was wondering do they interview before you leave or do they invite back, and on that note, does it make a difference whether or not you rotate there as to getting an interview? By the way, where did you find the facilities to work out and where did you live during your stay ? Cost? Thanks again...

I just talked with a friend that finished up July in Memphis. He said it was extremely laid back. You're with a different attending each week. Most of the time was at private clinics. He took almost no call, but stayed late if there was something going on. Very few hard core questions in office/OR. He came away with the impression that the month was viewed by CC as a chance for everyone to get to meet each other. He has no idea where he stands. A strange month, but relaxed except for the constant worry that he some how should be doing more. show up on time, be interested, ask appropriate questions, read anatomy, be genuine and humble -- all the stuff you've seen in previous posts -- good luck!

Thanks for the reply. One last question if you don't mind... could you find out whether or not he felt comfortable enough to ask for a LOR from the attendings, given only a 7 day introduction to each of them. Thanks again.

I dont' think he's getting any letters from memphis. I also don't think he worked with Dr. Canale. My guess is that if he had, he would have asked -- wouldn't you?? the worse he can say is NO right?? Might give you an idea of where you stand. The students don't get to do much to show their stuff -- it really is a strange month. If you try too hard, you look like a no-life tool. However, what they ask isn't that much so you may feel like a slacker. I think everyone gets an exit interview with Azar where he tells you if you stand a chance or not of getting interviewed. Sorry I don't know more!
