Reply Case and Cleveland
I was looking at Case's webpage and some of the senior ortho electives offered are at the Cleveland Clinic. Does anyone know the relationship b/w the two programs and what, if any, overlap there is? I know they're two separate residency programs, but I'm unclear as to the med school's involvement at various hospitals. I obviously want to do the elective where I'll get the most facetime with residents and attendings for Case.

Any comments from people who already rotated there would be great!

I'm not sure what senior electives you're speaking of but... the only time that CWRU and CCF residents overlap is at Metrohealth Medical Center where both the CCF and CWRU residents do their trauma rotations. CWRU residents do not rotate at the CCF and CCF residents do not rotate at the University Hospitals of Cleveland. As far as senior medical student stuff goes (if you want face-time with the CWRU residents), sign up for an acting interniship at CWRU. The month is split: two weeks at Metro for geneal ortho and trauma, and two weeks at University Hospitals on EITHER the spine or joint service.

Reply CASE and CCF
Once a month the two programs get together for a joint Orthopaedic conference but other than the Metro rotation they have no interaction with one another.
Both programs are very strong, however CCF is now a 6 year program for all those interested in Research.
All the best.

before you go, someone should tell you that the programs hate each other. so, it would be in you best interest to just pretend that case is the ONLY ortho program in town! doesn't seem like this bad blood exists between the residents, but there is definitely some distaste in the upper ranks for each other. that is just the word on the street. turns out on all of these away rotations you have to be able to work your butt off and be aware of the particular politics at each place (and how not to p@#$ someone off with an offhanded statement)! good luck walking on eggshells until the match next year!

Let's just say that I'm VERY close to this situation and I don't believe that they hate each other, rather, it seems like there is more of a mutual respect between the residents. Now between the attendings.. I don't know. Ortho2002's comment is well taken though: if you do go to Case of CCF there is only one program in Cleveland (at least, while you're there).

Among the residents, there is pretty much a mutual respect for each other. They work closely together while at Metro. Some of the residents bad mouth the CCF program sometimes - not sure where that comes from though. Many CCF residents come from Case med school. I don't think you should hide your interest in either program while you rotate at least among the residents - not sure about the attendings.

The bottom line is both Case and CCF are among the best ortho residencies anywhere, and you'd be happy to match at either place.

Reply Rotated at both
Rotated at both places. As stated above, the residents do have a mutual respect for one another. I've NEVER heard any disparaging comments made by residents from one place about the other. As for attendings, some had very good things to say about the other program. There were some attendings who definitely hate the other place, but most respect the other attendings. CCF does not take as many case guys as one might think. it's been averaging about 1 guy every other year. And as for which program is better. . . . .I've had multiple program directors at other places tell me that CWRU is the PREMIER program in the state of Ohio. Take that for what you will. Personally, I think CCF would be a great place to be an attending. CWRU is a great place to train for residency. I'll leave it at that.

I have also seen both programs, and disagree with the above comment. Both are excellent programs, but do things differently.

At case, the program is very top heavy. The chiefs operate a lot, and the juniors are in the OR to hold hook. They also do all the scutwork, for example, the junior on the joints team can be responsible for about 35 patients, while the chief doesn't necessarily see any of them.

At CCF, from the time you are an intern, you are very rarely double scrubbed. It is usually just the resident and an attending. Everybody takes care of their own patients (including chiefs and fellows) and there is less scutwork.

That being said, I think that both programs are among the best anywhere, and having seen chiefs from both programs operate, I think both programs train their residents well.

Reply Case vs. CC
Rotated at both and, without question, believe that Case is a far superior training program than Cleveland Clinic. I have never talked to an academic attending who would disagree with this. This applies to operative experience, research experience, and reputation in the orthopaedic community. If you have the opportunity to choose between the two, the decision would be very easy in my opinion.
