The Mayo Clinic Department of Orthopedic Surgery invites third and fourth year medical students as well as unmatched orthopedic applicants to apply for a one-year clinical research fellowship position starting in the Spring of 2025 with the Orthopedic Surgery Artificial Intelligence Lab (OSAIL) in Rochester, MN. The start date is flexible between May and June depending on the applicant’s academic calendar.

This is an excellent opportunity for highly-motivated individuals to strengthen their application for the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Match. The research fellows will be expected to work on numerous projects with several investigators; therefore, excellent organizational and communication skills are paramount. The research fellows will work closely with Dr. Wyles, Dr. Taunton, Dr. Larson, Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo, and several other Mayo Clinic orthopedic faculty. Furthermore, fellows will report directly and work alongside OSAIL data scientists on innovative AI applications to the field of orthopedics. Duties include idea creation, project design, scientific literature search, image annotation, data cleaning, data collection, statistical analysis, figure creation, grant editing, leading weekly lab meetings and manuscript preparation. Previous experience with artificial intelligence and computer programming is not required but will be considered a bonus.

In addition, the fellows will also have the opportunity to practice surgical skills and enhance their orthopedic and research knowledge through working in the cadaver lab with residents/attendings, observing and participating in journal clubs, and attending weekly didactic sessions in various disciplines within orthopedics to develop a strong fund of knowledge.

For more information about our lab please visit our X @Mayo_OSAIL and/or our website (). If you have further questions about the position, you can reach out to our current research fellows Sami Saniei ([email protected]) and Miguel Girod-Hoffman ([email protected]).

To apply, email the following items to [email protected] using “OSAIL Research Fellowship Application - [Your Name]” in the Subject line.
  • Personal statement, CV, Medical School Transcript, USMLE Step 1 score report or pass/fail status and USMLE Step 2 score report if available (all in one PDF document)
  • Two letters of recommendation
We will be reviewing applications and extending interviews in a rolling admissions format. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer this position to international medical students. Also, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.  Thank you for your interest in our position!

Sincerely,

Cody C. Wyles, MD and Michael J. Taunton, MD
