This is a 1-year immersive research opportunity at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC. Under the guidance of Dr. Brett Levine, medical students will have the unique opportunity to conduct research with faculty, residents, and staff throughout the Medstar network while also gaining the knowledge and skills to be successful for away rotations in their fourth year. This position is designed for enthusiastic medical students between their 3rd and 4th year of medical school. The focus area for the research experience is in the subspecialty of adult reconstruction, but there are opportunities to work with the rest of the department. Under the mentorship of Dr. Brett Levine and Dr. Katharine Harper, you will gain hands-on research experience and work closely with residents, attendings, and Georgetown Medical Students. This will be an educational year with a chance to experience all that Washington, DC has to offer. Requirements for this position:

- Ability to begin the position within the designated time frame
- Must be able to be on site (Medstar Georgetown University Hospital)
- Strong desire to pursue a career in orthopedics
- Must be able to work independently and take initiative
- Strong attention to detail, organization skills and multitasking ability
- Be able to communicate effectively
- Must be able to lead team of students in managing research projects
- Experience with research and/or IRB writing
Student responsibilities:
- The candidate must be able to manage and coordinate projects within the adult recon division, including clinical studies, industry-sponsored projects, and RCTs.
- Students are expected to communicate with faculty and other research staff regarding study-related activities and updates.
- Maintenance of study logs/data/tools.
- Entering data into databases for studies, as well as consent documents to the EMR.
- Assisting with data collection in the operating room or during clinic.
- Drafting/editing/submitting of IRB documents.
- Participation in research meetings and research related activities.
- Students are encouraged to attend grand rounds, resident conference, and service-specific conferences weekly.
- Conducting basic statistical analysis for projects and work with on-site statisticians.
- Assisting with writing, submitting, presenting, and publishing any abstracts or manuscripts.
- Serve as the intersection for students, residents, and primary investigators for research projects.
Position benefits and expected outcomes:
- The research fellow should expect to have >5 research presentations/publications/abstracts by the end of the year.
- Will have gained a better understanding of adult reconstruction and orthopedic surgery in general in preparation for away rotations and residency.
- Will have the opportunity to gain operating room experience and exposure.
- Will have the opportunity to gain experience in the orthopaedic clinic.
- Will have gained proficiency in scientific writing
- Opportunity to present at research conferences at the local and national level
- Guidance and assistance with building a competitive application for applying orthopaedic residency and throughout the match process.
