Dear Medical Students,
Dr. Uma Srikumaran is inviting highly motivated medical students to apply for the Shoulder and Sports Medicine Research Fellowship in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
This fellowship is aimed towards medical students interested in gaining Orthopaedic Surgery research experience through an immersive program at a top orthopaedic institution.
There are three research fellowships available, which are paid ($35,000), one-year positions with flexible start dates (May/June/July/August).
Fellows can expect to produce a minimum of 10-15 manuscripts, many of which can be 1st author. As well as many other abstracts, posters and podium presentations.
Research fellows will be provided with a rich and well-rounded experience that we hope will have a long-lasting impact on their careers. During the year, fellows will work closely with both Dr. Uma Srikumaran, as well as other members of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Uma Srikumaran is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Director of the Johns Hopkins University Clinical Shoulder Fellowship, and Vice Chair of Quality, Safety, & Service.
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins University has weekly educational activities that you are encouraged to take part in. These include weekly grand rounds and weekly shoulder journal club. Finally, fellows have the opportunity to attend clinics and work directly with both Dr. Srikumaran.
Research fellow responsibilities include:
• Designing research hypotheses and performing literature reviews
• Drafting, submitting, and maintaining IRB proposals
• Collecting clinical data and performing statistical analyses
• Writing and submitting publications
• Writing and submitting research grants
• Clinic (1 day/week): This involves scribing and enrolling patients into prospective clinical trials and following-up on active enrollees.
• Managing various aspects of clinical trials
Applicants are selected based on previous research experience, interpersonal and organizational skills, and a virtual interview. Research fellows typically begin soon after finishing MS2 or MS3 year and are expected to work for one calendar year before returning to medical school and applying to residency.
