Any opinions on LSU vs. Tulane? I am a 3rd year med student at UTSW from Louisiana and really want to go back to New Orleans. Competitiveness? Atmosphere?

I have no opinon on either. I have heard unfavorable things about LSU though. Ask some of the UTSW residents. I believe that one of the 5th years (Mazoue) went to LSU.

I bet I know you. Is this the good young Dr. McNulty?

I'm a UTSW MS4 (well technically alum now I guess). I emailed back and forth with an LSU-NO resident and he had plenty of good things to say about his program. I think it is pretty high workload, lots of trauma but good training. Tulane I know less about. They turned me down for an interview. I would try going to the websites of the departments you are interested in and finding the email addresses of residents or program coordinators. Tell them you want to open dialogue with current residents to talk about the program. I had good luck doing that last year with a few (but it takes time so you can't do it with everywhere).

Good luck.

I spent a month at LSU this year and enjoyed my time there very much. However, I did not rank it in my top 3. The main reason is that LSU is a program in transition. Their chairman (D?Ambrosia) is a very big name but he will be going to Colorado next year. In addition, they will be losing the vice chairman and the residency coordinator this year. So unless they have found several new faculty that leaves a skeleton of a program (only 3 non peds faculty). NO is a very cool place and the resident are great but they just don?t have enough faculty coverage. However, this is the case with many programs in the academic orthopaedic these days.

In regards to Tulane, I interviewed there and was moderately impressed (the program coordinator is cool as h$%& though). They have a solid faculty and the residents seem OK. It is very similar to LSU with the exception that you might have to go to Atlanta for the peds rotation. They did not show you any of the hospital during the interview day. This troubled some applicants.

In the end I don?t think that you would be very unhappy at either program (I ranked both in my top 5). Just remember that both programs are very trauma heavy and that there will be many nights that you might not sleep very much over the next 5 years. But who cares they are so many hot chicks in NO that you might never get a good night of sleep anyway.

I am a MS3 soon to be MS4 at LSU. It's true; it seems that all the faculty are leaving right now. But that only means one thing... several fresh members of the faculty coming in looking forward to work hard. One the other hand think about it: less faculty means more freedom of what you want do do in the OR.
As for LSU vs. Tulane... both do their trauma at Charity. So I think that as far as the experience is concerned, its pretty similar. Tulane is more of a name/prestige thing; so it depends what you want to do after residency.

In summary, both are good programs. LSU residents work their a$$ off, but great training overall.

How is the UTSW ortho program, at your school? :smokin:
