Hey everyone,
To take your mind off things until tomorrow, does anyone that rotated or interviewed at any of these programs have any thoughts? I'm trying to decide about where to spend a month next year.
Thanks and good luck tomorrow!!

BigDiesel-
am very intrigued by your positive comments/opinions about maryland, for there are few....had a bunch of questions about the program, was looking for a former rotator to ask questions, probably more than conducive to writing on here at the moment....any chance you could email me? ill include below. if so, ill summarize things on the board for other future orthopods....thanks!

I didn't rotate at Maryland, but I interviewed and ranked it #6 on my list. I really liked the residents, and I was impressed with Pellegrino (although he's only been there for a few months, so it's hard to say what his impact will be). I didn't rank it higher because I'm looking for a place with more research focus, which is just a personal preference, not a criticism of the program. Also, Shock Trauma is a really amazing place. Imagine your school's trauma bay and then picture a whole hospital full of trauma beds. The fracture experience there is really outstanding- in fact residents from Joint Disease have the option of doing a rotation there to broaden their skills.
I think they need to add a few more faculty and then they'll have an outstanding program. Otherwise they are a very solid place to learn ortho.
Any thoughts from Maryland students/rotators?

Bonedude, I am going to post here so that others can respond to my comments and give their opinion. I did not rotate at Maryland, but I interviewed there, and I ranked it third. considering that I would like to be in NY that is fairly high. It seemed like they got a lot of operative experience, which is one of the important things I was looking for. Shock trauma is an @#$et, Dr. Pellegrino seems like a great addition, and they are bringing in a few new docs. One guy that interviewed me is a young sports guy who I was very impressed with. He was starting a lot of interesting research projects.
I did not rotate at Hopkins either, but my impression of there is that it has a spectacular reputation(because it's Hopkins) but that they don't get great operative experience. I could be wrong about this, but I've heard it from a few sources. That's why I want others to be able to reply to this post.
As for Emory, I know absolutely nothing about that program.
Let me know if you still want me to personally email you and I will.

Hey just to add to the last comment with regards to maryland and hopkins (I can't comment on Emory either). I rotated at hopkins and had several friends who rotated at Maryland. I think hopkins operative experience is actually extremely good, so I think that rumor is positively untrue. However, I have also heard spectacular things about Maryland and the trauma expereince there. It's true that it's less academic than Hopkins and less research oriented, but if you're not looking for research than that's okay.

The programs are actually more related than most realize. Hopkins residents go to Shock Trauma for 10 wks as 4th years. Maryland residents go to hopkins for Peds and Tumor.
Actually, regarding the operative experience at Hopkins, I would have to agree that the rumors your heard were totally bogus. The residents have a nice mix of getting to operate with master surgeons in various subspecialties as well as operate with quite a lot of autonomy on a number of rotations. Under both settings they operate early and often. They grumble occasionally about a few things, but their operative experience is never among them.

Thanks for clearing up that rumor about Hopkins. I hate to spread things that may not be true, and I wasn't sure about that one.
