Does anyone know of programs that DO NOT hold it against you if you don't rotate there? In other words, programs that seem to match most of their residents just from application and interview. My school is only allowing us two aways and that seems to narrow the field a bit.

Out of the 15 residents currently in the program at MUSC only 1 did not rotate.
There are many programs like musc out there.
It is probably not that important now, but during interview season when you have conflicts it is good to know whch programs you really have a shoot at. Good luck. :pimp:

programs that don't seem to mind if you didn't rotate with them: Mayo, Campbell Clinic

programs that seem to take a lot of rotators include Vanderbilt, UNC, Alabama

Good luck.

Was any reasoning given for not doing more than 2? My advisor has been advocating doing as many aways as possible if you're the type of student that generally does well in clinical situations and can get along with people. Else, doing many may cause you to shoot yourself in the foot when they see how you don't get along with them. What does your advisor say?

At my school, the first time you ask for the reason they only allow two, the reply is, "Because that is the policy... and you ortho guys are the worst offenders." If you follow by asking the reason for the POLICY, they say that they don't want someone going into surgery to be too one-dimensional. They recommend doing non-surgical rotations to improve your abilities as a house officer and to become a well-rounded physician.
And I'm like, "Who cares about all that? See Bone, fix Bone." But seriously, I guess I understand the point, and it makes me wonder if anyone has heard of any non-ortho rotations that residencies like to see.
As to whether doing more than two aways makes you look bad, I hadn't heard that, unless you look bad anyway, in which case the increased exposure would maximize your...well... badness.

Other rotations that interviewers like to see:

A lot of interviewers were impressed that I was doing an Acting internship (SubI) in Internal Medicine, especially since it's not required at my school. But I think that just about any non-surgical rotation goes a long way with interviewers who want to see a well rounded applicant. There's more to the world than just bones, muscles, and joints. Not much more, but there is more.

I would agree with Bone Jock on the medicine sub I (as well.. we suffered er... took this rotation together) some interviewers were pretty impressed with that. I also did two months of critical care (one SICU, one MICU) and that generated some discussion on the trail.
Another rotation that I thought was really helpful, and that interviewers liked to hear about, was musculoskeletal radiology (if your school offers it).

Keep this in mind: someday you will be doing NOTHING but ortho (which I could not dream up a better situation) so... try to do things in your fourth year of med school that you will never do again in order to make yourself a well rounded physician.

I agree with the medicine sub-I. As painful as that month was (and it was painful) it helps your overall understanding of managing patients on the wards. Also, I did 1/2 a month of forensic pathology working with the Deputy State Medical Examiner. As was stated above, do some rotations that interest you but that you don't want to do permanently.
