Looking to do aways at these programs. Info on the rotation, housing, and the probability of getting an interview following the rotation would be appreciated. Good luck to everyone on the match.

Both are great choices to rotate at. Northwestern guarantees an interview if you rotate there, and it's a very large program, so your odds increase tremendously by rotating. I know of a student who rotated there and loved it and recommended it highly, although someone else will have to give you the details as I did not inquire about specifics. NW is very heavy in sports...perhaps to a weakness some say.

I don't know many people who got an interview at NW without doing an away rotation, me included. I did interview at Duke without rotating and felt that I would have a good chance of going there if I wanted to, as good as a student who rotated there. The bottom line is that if you're cool, work hard, and get along with different kinds of people, doing an away can only help you. But they all know that it's impossible to rotate at every school, so it's okay at most places. Duke invites you back to spend a few days with them, on the floor, in the ER, and in the OR, and they really look highly on that. They're also a school that want you to tell them that they are your number one, etc, and I think that means more to them than a kid that rotates and doesn't indicate that. They're really big on saying they matched their top 8 or only went to 10 etc. Hope that helps.

I didn't do an away there, but I ranked them 5th. I liked what I saw on interview day and got some good feedback from people that did rotate there that I trusted. Their didactics are awesome. They really emphasize learning the basics. There are lots of classroom hours especially in the beginning months, when they know you're green. I think the surgery exposure is good, but it's not a trauma hospital, so if you want to be a traumatologist or enjoy being up all hours of the night on call, it's not your place. The intern year is pretty rough. Tons of general surgery, they wear white pants and a short coat, which I thought sucked. They also have Saturday conference that's mandatory. So those were a couple negatives. Their training was excellent, they get any fellowships they want, and overall, the residents seemed happy and well rounded. The town was a bit slow for my tastes, but there's enough there to make it livable. Hope this helps.

If you have more specific questions, I'll try to answer them.
