Thanks for all the sage advice thus far, but I was wondering what to be sure to take with me on my away rotation. Will I have time to even wear casual clothes ?, bring scrubs from my home hospital or will they suggest I wear theirs?, maps? you know things like that, some good old practical advice...thanks in advance to all who reply
Busy,
take clothes to wear in clinic, your white coat(s), most places will prefer that you wear their scrubs, so you really sholdn't need any from home. Make sre you take something to read (pocket fracture book etc..) Definitely bring casual stuff.... you never know what (or who) can happen.

get a map and get familiar with the area where you will work if possible. get their a day or two early and make a dry run so you know how to get to work and park etc (don't want to be late). Plus getting there early gives you a little time to check out the town you are in and see if you could have fun living there (but not too much fun, first day hangover is not good from what I hear).

good luck and have fun.

When I went to the Mayo I drove and stuffed my truck full of stuff that I "might" need. That included suits (in case you get interviewed while you're there), casual clothes, sporty things (we went paint balling one weekend there), and your white coats. I also took books and my lap top. And last, but certainly most important I loaded up the golf clubs and I did get to go out with some of the residents and swing the sticks one weekend while I was there.

I'm doing an away right now...we always round in the am with shirt/tie and then wear it for the clinic days and just change into scrubs for OR (I think most places will provide the scrubs). Bring your white coat. I also brought a suit for when I meet with the chairman or whatever else. Bring your Netter and Hoppenfeld's physical exam & exposures book if you got it. I agree about bringing casual clothes to go out in. A laptop is definately nice so you can get on the net and do presentations and such on the go. I drove to this away so I was able to bring a bunch of stuff. I dunno how I'm going to bring a month's full of stuff when I fly to my next away.
