About the Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our orthopedic spine research team. As a fellow, you will contribute to impactful projects addressing degenerative disc diseases, trauma, scoliosis, and other spinal conditions. Your role will include data collection, analysis, and manuscript preparation, and you will also have opportunities for professional growth and collaboration with leading orthopedic researchers. Fellows will work at University Orthopedics under the mentorship of Dr. Alan H. Daniels and Dr. Bassel G. Diebo, with opportunities to get to know and collaborate with the entire department. This role requires a high level of independence, creativity, and resourcefulness in solving problems and achieving research goals.

Responsibilities
Research Support:
- Conduct literature reviews and assist in drafting manuscripts and abstracts.
- Manage databases and ensure accurate data entry from patient records.
- Collaborate with mentors and co-researchers on study design and implementation.

Data Analysis:
- Analyze patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), radiographic data, and genomic datasets.
- Run statistical models, including regression and mixed models, for longitudinal studies.
- Evaluate thresholds for spinal lordosis and other radiographic parameters.

Collaboration & Presentation:
- Work closely with other research fellows within the department and with fellows from other departments.
- Assist in preparing conference presentations and posters.
- Coordinate with institutional partners, including global orthopedic groups and mentorship initiatives.
- Engage in outreach efforts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in orthopedics.

Organization & Delegation:
- Organize tasks effectively for yourself and undergraduate or medical student volunteers.
- Delegate responsibilities as needed to ensure smooth workflow and team productivity.

Project Development:
- Work on innovative and evolving research projects. This year, areas of focus have included degenerative disc disease, trauma-related injuries, scoliosis, and the impact of social determinants of health on patient outcomes.

Technology Integration:
- Utilize and refine AI tools to improve medical text readability and patient communication materials.
- Explore automation solutions for repetitive data extraction tasks.

Preferred Skills & Experience
While some skills can be developed on the job, the following are preferred to support independence and enhance project outcomes:

Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in statistical tools (e.g., SPSS, R, Python).
- Experience with radiographic measurement tools or imaging software (e.g., SurgiMap, DICOM viewers).
- Familiarity with AI tools, including OpenAI API, for medical content simplification and automation.

Research Expertise:
- Background in spine-related clinical research or orthopedics.
- Knowledge of PROMs (e.g., ODI, SRS Total) and genomic research techniques.

Additional Skills:
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Comfortable working collaboratively and independently.

Qualifications
- Current third or fourth year medical student.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., biology, biostatistics, public health, or medicine).
- Experience in clinical or translational research preferred.
- Proficient in scientific writing and data presentation.
