I have interviewed at a program which is on probation and wondering if I should include it in my ROL. If I were to rank it last and ended up matching here what are the cons of matching into such a program? Am I better off leaving the program off my ROL? I have less than ten interviews and wondering if matching here would be better/worse than not matching into ortho at all. I do have a few prelim programs as back ups and I also wonder if I am better off matching at a prelim than this program.
Definitely rank it..ahead of all the prelims as well. Going to a program on probation is better than not matching in my mind.

I also agree with the above. If I was in your situation, I'd rank it last, but still rank it above the pre-lims. Matching to any ortho program >>> not matching. Good luck!

agree, i feel like any allopathic residency stands a good chance of coming off probation with a few going on from time to time.

I guess my hesitation is due to a not so impressive interview day, very rough location and commuting woes. Added to this if the program were to shut down I might wish I hadn't matched at all. Speaking of closure, what happens if that were to happen say sometime midway during the next 5 yrs?

Less than impressive as in I was not impressed. My interview however went quite well.

I've heard of programs "inheriting" residents from disbanded programs in the past. One that comes to mind is Stanford (a few yrs back)

was it bad enough that you would not match rather than match there? if so, don't rank it at all. if your main concern is the probation, i agree that there is a high likelihood they will come off probation or, if in the rare case they are terminated, you will be shown "mercy" by other programs and have a good chance of getting into another ortho program
