I know that there are several posts about community programs, but i am trying to get the bottom line.
Can you really get good training? How important is name recognition in the long run?
Are people able to get strong fellowships when they are done? Does it totally eliminate the possibility of a career in academics down the road?
A couple of programs in particular that I am wondering about are Atlanta Medical Center, Allegheny (Pittsburg), Mt. Carmel (Columbus OH), and Union Memorial (Baltimore). Any insight would be helpful. thanks.

I would not classify Union Mem. as a community program. They're a smaller hospital, but they have a kickass lab and spend time at both Shock Trauma and Hopkins for peds and tumor. Union also has the Curtis National Hand Center and world-reknowned foot and ankle docs. There only weakness would probably be spine, but they just got a new spine guy. Recent residents have gotten fellowships at HSS, Kerlan-Jobe, Miami. There attendings are very well connected.

Be forewarned though, they only take two a year. They also only interview about 20-25, about 8 of whom are rotators. Should have about a 235 on Step 1 to think about getting an interview without rotating. :smokin:

does anyone know which programs are larger community programs (4 or more spots) that also happen to be in urban areas?
