Hey everybody - I am a 3rd year a couple of rotations into it and was curious about a comment from my last non-surg intern - he is pretty much a complete tool but he commented that I look and act like I am going to be a surgeon. When pressed he said it is not @#$%iness or other "surgery sterotypes" but just the impression I give - whatever that means. I did fine gradewise and have always thrown up the "I'm not sure what I want to go into" line - but I was wondering if anyone else has run into this and what they did about it - thanks

Let me get this straight. You are asking us what impact a random comment made by a tool of an intern (who is not even in a surgical specialty) should have on the career you will choose to have for the next 30 years of your life???!!!
Guys, I'm getting pretty sick of having to navigate thru pages of useless questions being made by some obviously lame people to get the valuable, worthwhile information this forum used to provide. If you want to know where you stand, first use the search function b/c all of these questions have been asked before.

Sounds like the medicine intern has a serious case of penis envy. My advice-- ignore it.

I am getting tired of reading posts by hotheads who would rather throw a temper tantrum than hit the back button. Hit the back button and go to the next post if you think something is so useless, don't berate the poster.

UTSW, I would take it with a grain of salt and move on, especially if you getting good evals. In my experience, future surgeons don't spend as much time categorizing the top 40 items on he DDx and focus more on Tx plan. You probably ran into a medicine intern that noticed you aren't as anal retentive as he is.

Yeah, I got alot of that during 3rd year as well. I think it's because of what Ortho2003 said. I always tended to cut to the chase as far as pt. management. While the med resident was saying "Hmmm, better get the left-legged papular rash consult", I'd usually ask something like "so how come we don't try this first?" I also was usually a little scimpy as far as the length of my notes and presenting patients. I was always thorough, but my notes were always a little shorter and to the point.

I never really took it as an insult, and I don't think it was meant to be. It's just different strokes for different folks. Don't sweat the comments that don't mean squat in the end anyway.
