Hey ya'll. Doing an away next, wondering what some of the things you gotta do/shouldn't do while away are. I've heard making an appt with the chairman, stating your interest in the program is a must. Who should you try to get a letter from? heard mixed things about asking chairman, esp. if they dont know you (obviously, I guess). Any other necessities while there or faux paus you guys hear of? )
I think one piece of advice I have seen on this forum before is do not try to show up the other rotation students. Work had and get along with everyone, try to make yourself look good (not at the expence of others), and show them that you would be someone cool to hang out with for the next five years, not someone that is going to try to compete with them every step of the way.

I second the work hard and fit in. On one of my aways there was a guy who it seemed was constantly trying to make me and the other student look bad, but ended up looking like an ass. I dont think they even interviewed him......

Just think about the type of person that you would like to work with over the next five years and just use that as your standard.

right, right. in terms of smooching though, and who to smooch on...should you schedule an appt with the chairman or residency director to state your great interest in obtaining superior residency training at their fine institution? i.e. who are the right people to talk to? )

I would find out who their Chairman is, who their Residency Director is and try to find out who sits on their admissions committee. You don't want to come across as a kiss-ass but express your interest in their program. If you don't spend time on the chairman or residency director's service, then I'd schedule 10 minutes with them to introduce yourself. Just be honest with them. They'll find out if you are blowing smoke to them or not. Good luck

How bad does it look to ask for a day off during your away rotation (just one day). I already know now that I may need to be excused for one day during one of my away rotations. And there is no way for me to reschedule it =(

Gambit... I am stressing a bit about taking a few days off as well... my best friend is getting married and I am in her wedding! An the best part of this S&%t sandwhich is that I will be across the country...

I think that if you let them know early and only make is a day or two, it will be fine...

but maybe this is just me sayin a prayer!

The way I am going into my aways... just like the rest of my life: work hard - play hard

Don't think it should be a problem guys...a couple of friends had to take off a day or two during aways that I know of. Just try and keep it a day, max two and tell them ahead of time. Besides, what kind of friend dosen't see off his buddy during his last day of freedom? )

I took off 1 day on my first ortho A.I. here at home. I was IN my boy's wedding and I let them know on the first day. They were cool about it, and even offered to give me the next day off if I wanted it. But like a trooper, I left the reception at 1:30 in the morning, drove 3 1/2 hours home, slept a couple of hours and showed up for rounds the next day.

For Mr_Madomi, a quote from a dermatology intern that I know: "life is a big @$%& sandwich, step up and take a bite."
