Position: Research Fellow
Duration: 1 year
Compensation: Hourly Pay with full-time employment
Where: Univ. of Maryland Dept. of Orthopaedics / Univ. of Maryland Medical Center.
Who: Under the direction of Dr. Steven C. Ludwig, the head of the Division of Spine Surgery in the Department of Orthopaedics. Dr. Ludwig is currently Professor of Orthopedics at the UM School of Medicine
When: Flexible, Approx. start May-June 2015

Dr. Ludwig is seeking an ambitious 3rd, 4th year medical student, or graduate who is interested in a year long clinical research fellowship.

Duties of the research fellow will include:

- Coordination/Collaboration with orthopaedic residents, fellows and attendings on research projects from various sub-specialties.
- Supervision of 1st and 2nd year Medical Student orthopaedic research projects.
- Basic Statistical analysis of data
- Drafting and assisting in the writing of book chapters and Textbooks
- Submission of protocols to the IRB
- Drafting and Submission of Manuscripts to journals (e.g. Spine, Spine Journal, JOT, JBJS, JAAOS)
- Identifying, consenting, and acting as a resource for study participants
- Assisting with lab work, including cadaver dissections

Goals/Opportunities:

- Opportunity to conduct clinical research and strengthen their application for admission to the orthopedic residency match.
- Fellow will have the ability to be 1st author on all papers that he/she significantly contributes to
- The ability to collaborate with Fellows, orthopaedic residents, and other attendings in all orthopaedic subspecialties
- Opportunities to observe surgical procedures (project permitting)
- Ample opportunities to attend Orthopaedic Grand Rounds, Conferences, Journal Clubs, Cadaver Labs, surgical skills etc.
- Opportunities to present research at National and Regional Conferences
- Dr. Ludwig is on the residency selection committee and can offer insight into strengthening the applicant’s candidacy.
