The University of Cincinnati is offering a one-year fellowship in orthopaedic research. The fellowship runs from May 2015 through May 2016. The fellow would manage 6-9 clinical research projects under one-on-one mentorship from orthopaedic faculty at the University of Cincinnati. The fellow would be expected to submit and present abstracts at annual meetings and prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication. This is a paid position of $30,000 per fellowship year with benefits.

The clinical responsibilities are limited to seeing research patients in the hospital as well as in the clinic. The fellow is encouraged to attend conferences, Grand Rounds and journal club in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The fellow would be encouraged to participate in projects in all divisions of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Activities would include research planning and design, data collection and analysis, and manuscript preparation and submission. For the self-directed, motivated individual, this can be a very productive year. In addition to improving your research skills in an academic environment, the goal of the program is to have the fellow, with full-time research experience and strong letters of recommendation, successfully match into an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency position.

The deadline for application is by noon on March 20, 2015. This program is limited to U.S. medical school graduates.

If you have any questions regarding this position, you may email the current fellow, Rafael Kakazu at [email protected]. To apply, please send your CV, USMLE board scores, and a brief statement of interest (250 words or fewer) to: Shelley Hess, Sr. Administrative Coordinator at [email protected] or via fax 513-558-2220.

As the current fellow, I am happy to report that I have successfully matched to an orthopeadic surgery residency program. I want to congratulate those who also were successful in the match this year. To those who were met with disappointing news today I offer my condolences. As someone who went through the process last year, I understand the sheer disappointment that comes with today. All hope is not lost. Over the past year, I have met many residents and attendings who reapplied and are successful in their career. Getting there will take hard work and good fortune but is possible. In fact, I was the 6th fellow here at UC and all have matched into orthopaedic surgery.

The UC research fellowship has been an incredible experience for me. I have had the opportunity to shadow in clinic, attend all resident didactics, and will be attending AAOS and Mid America to present papers. Collaborators are available in basic science as well as biomechanics; UC has also recruited a bioengineer who will integrate the latest in 3-D printing into the department. Faculty support has been outstanding.

As a research fellow you will be allowed and encouraged to attend all interviews you earn. With several more publications and stronger letters, I had a successful application season. At nearly every interview, the quality and quantity of the research was brought up as well as the strength of the letters.

The program at UC is outstanding. The research fellow is part of the team from the beginning. Having completed medical school you will be treated like and expected to be a doctor. Residents and faculty are very supportive and are easy to work with. There are several opportunities to display your character and work ethic to the team. As the previous fellows will surely acknowledge, this can be a very productive and rewarding position.

To those seeking to reapply, this is an excellent opportunity with a strong track record of success worth considering.

Please email me with questions.
