2025-26 University of Utah Orthopaedic Spine Research Fellowship
The University of Utah Orthopaedic Spine team invites 3rd and 4th year US medical students interested in orthopaedic surgery to apply for a one-year spine surgery research fellowship at the University of Utah. The University of Utah’s orthopaedic spine training program, regarded as one of the top programs in the country, is interested in taking competitive applicants to the next level to facilitate a top tier match. We are seeking candidates that are willing to take a year off between their 3rd and 4th year, and who demonstrate determination, grit, problem solving, an interest in orthopaedic research, and an outstanding work ethic. 
Position: Spine Surgery Research Fellow
Duration: 1 year
Start Date: May 2024 (flexible)
Compensation: Salary + conference registration/travel
Location: University Orthopaedic Center, University of Utah, Salt Lake City.
  Goals/Opportunities of the Fellowship: 
  • 10-20+ peer reviewed publications/book chapters/conference presentations with first author opportunities directly related to contribution
  • Sub-I rotation at the University of Utah
  • Opportunities to observe surgical procedures and/or spend time in clinic
  • Orthopaedic mentorship (including Letters of Recommendation) to support you in the match
  • Attend orthopaedic grand rounds, subspecialty conferences, journal clubs, and resident conferences to help improve your overall knowledge in the specialty
Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a team leader to spearhead research projects and ensure throughput by all team members
  • Designing research hypotheses and performing literature reviews
  • Organize and maintain all aspects of ongoing projects
  • Organize and present project updates at weekly research meetings 
  • Lead studies with fellows, residents, and medical students
  • Data collection, data analysis, manuscript drafting and editing, grant drafting, manuscript submission
  • Preparation of research and conference presentations
  • Aid in management of prospective clinical trials

  • MS3 or MS4 students with desire to match competitively in Orthopaedic Surgery
