Position Title: Research Fellow
Positions: 2
Duration: 1 year
Where: Rush University Medical Center, Chicago IL
When: May 2026 (Approx.) - May 2027
This opening is for a one-year, paid position as the hip preservation research fellow for Dr. Shane Nho and Dr. Joel Williams at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush for the 2026-2027 academic year. This opportunity affords a unique experience in high-volume orthopedic research and offers full immersion into the field of academic orthopedics. There are two funded research fellow positions for the upcoming year.
Please note, we are unable to fund any international applicants at this time.
Strengths of the Position:
- Hip preservation is an emerging field allowing for high volume publication
- Opportunity to work with Dr. Shane Nho, a world-renowned hip arthroscopy surgeon and the co-director for the prestigious sports medicine fellowship at Rush, and Dr. Joel Williams, a widely recognized comprehensive hip specialist and orthopedic trauma surgeon
- Opportunity to present your research at national and international conferences
- Past fellows have matched at their top choices such as the Mayo Clinic, University of Utah, Wake Forest, NYU/Hospital for Joint Diseases, and the University of Virginia, amongst other great programs
As the research ‘point person’, the fellow is responsible for managing multiple (40+) projects involving a wide breadth of clinical, biomechanical, anatomic, and imaging studies related to hip preservation. The fellow is also responsible for securing and maintaining IRB, HIPAA and Human Subjects protection policies to ensure ethical research practices and maintenance of patient confidentiality in a multicenter research setting. On-the-job training will be provided as necessary. This is a paid full-time position for the 2026-2027 academic year, beginning May 2026 (start date negotiable).
Essential Job Functions:
Clinical Repository
The repositories in hip arthroscopy and open hip preservation techniques are large and growing outcomes databases that are the basis for the group’s many clinical research projects. It is critical for the fellow to actively maintain these prospectively collected surgical repositories. Each week the fellow must add all surgical patients to the database and record preoperative and intra-operative data, as well as ensure that preoperative outcome forms are completed. Each week, the fellow must go through the database and obtain postoperative follow-up on patients. This often requires calling patients, making strong interpersonal skills an important part of the job. The fellow must also ensure that the IRB for the repositories remains active.
Anatomic and Biomechanical Studies
These involve working with cadaveric hip specimens. The research fellow is responsible for ordering specimens and preparing them for anatomic dissection and biomechanics testing.
Imaging Studies
At Rush we are one of the leaders in 3D modeling for hip preservation surgery. The research fellow who coordinates our imaging studies is responsible for generation of these models through segmentation of advanced imaging and conducting our studies related to 3D modeling.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in health science related field
- Prior experience with research and statistical analysis (SPSS/R)
- Strong organizational, communication, and analytical skills
- Strong skills in various computer software including but not limited to Microsoft Office, electronic medical records systems, digital radiographic imaging systems and researchdatabases
This is an exceptional opportunity ideally suited to 3rd and 4th year medical students interested in academic orthopedics. As hip preservation is an emerging field, there are numerous opportunities to publish and present novel research at national and international conferences. While challenging, this position provides unparalleled exposure to a wide variety of orthopedic research and the ability to increase competitiveness when applying for orthopedic surgery residency positions.
