can anyone elaborate on their experience with Columbia. ie reputation, quality of teaching, work load, etc...

One of the ortho residents at my school was a student at Columbia and thought their operative experience was very weak. He ranked it at the bottom of his list. Too many fellows, not enough cases. Said some of the pgy 3s were watching the chief retract for the fellow most of the time. That is all second-hand knowledge and not first-hand knowledge, so use it as you will...

everyone on this forum should beware comments made by residents about other programs. remember that residents were applying two years ago, and things can certainly change in that amount of time. furthermore, residents can really only speak first-hand about their own program.
anyways, i rotated at Columbia, and i loved it. their operative load is just average, but they have all bases covered, and they're growing (most recent additions: peds, sports, shoulder). they have tumor and peds on-site, and they are only sent away for trauma in Tampa. call is very comfortable, with no q3 after internship. and since they are not Level One trauma, they get plenty of sleep on call nights. and there aren't that many fellows (only three, i think).
bottom line: the residents are very happy and very comfortable, and they get the fellowships they want (Kerlan-Jobe sports, Harvard joints, CHOP peds, etc.).

Residents generally tend to put down just about every program (especially the area where they train) other than their own. I wish I had a nickel for everytime I heard a resident berate another program.

thanks for your input...i wanted to ask why you liked it so much. Most of what i have heard comes from 2nd or 3rd hand and is completely unreliable to me. So when a student comes along who rotated there, i listen closely.
Do residents get to operate there? I mean really get to do the procedures or are they holding hooks all day. Is it over run with fellows? What made you think the residents were happy? How much trauma do they really see?
Finally, Have you had any contact with them? They had a strict policy of no thank you letters. Were you able to find out where you stood on their list?
