Anyone out there do an away elective at Harvard (MGH or BW)? Just interested to find out what it is really like working there. I got the sense on the interview trail that it is nice and that they work hard but not more than any other residency. I've heard rumors from others that the interaction between staff and residents isn't always the best and that they just get slammed with rounding, etc.

I rotated there and I think it is a great place to train. Dr. Herndon is resident-friendly and very receptive to their concerns. He implemented the core curriculum, which the residents go to every Wed. morning and are free from clinical duties. The residents work hard, particularly the PGY-1 year and the PGY-2 trauma rotation. The residents got along well, and the attendings I worked with were not malignant. The staff is virtually a who's who of orthopedics.
The only drawback that I could see is the fact that the program is large, and with any large program the training can be variable depending on the hospitals you are at and the attending that you work with. This was particularly true of the chief year, although with that being eliminated I'm not sure how that will all change. Otherwise, the program is solid, especially with the changes Dr. Herndon has made.
