The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh-UPMC invites qualified candidates to apply for the 2025–2026 Clinical Research Coordinator position. This unique opportunity involves working closely with Dr. John Fowler, Associate Residency Program Director, on multiple prospective, retrospective, and multi-institutional orthopaedic studies that are ongoing in the Surgery of the Upper Extremity Research (SUPER) group. This position is ideal for individuals seeking meaningful clinical research experience and direct involvement in the academic orthopaedic environment.   Position Title: Clinical Research Coordinator

Duration: 1 year
Who: US medical students, research-year candidates, or recent graduates interested in orthopaedic surgery or clinical research
Where: UPMC, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Pittsburgh, PA
When: Starting Summer 2025
Salary: A monthly stipend is provided  
Deadline: Rolling application Key Responsibilities 

  • Attend clinic with Dr. Fowler two days per week (Mercy on Mondays, Kaufmann on Thursdays) to support prospective research activities and patient enrollment
  • Assist with the coordination and execution of ongoing prospective and retrospective studies within the SUPER group and multi-institutional research networks
  • Participate in patient screening, recruitment, and data collection for clinical studies
  • Manage REDCap databases, maintain organized records, and facilitate follow-up efforts for enrolled subjects
  • Serve as a liaison with national study coordinators and collaborators across institutions
  • Perform chart reviews and contribute to abstract and manuscript preparation for research dissemination



Preferred Skills and Attributes  

  • Organized, proactive, and able to manage multiple studies simultaneously
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with comfort speaking to patients in clinical settings
  • Familiarity with REDCap, Epic, and basic research documentation practices
  • Prior experience with IRBs, multi-site coordination, or orthopaedic clinical research is a plus
  • Self-motivated and capable of adapting to a dynamic research environment

 Educational Opportunities 

  • Participate in department-wide clinical research with the opportunity to contribute to multiple projects beyond the SUPER group
  • Gain authorship on abstracts and manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals and national meetings
  • Observe clinical practice and procedures in orthopaedic surgery
