Beginning in 2012, the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Orthopaedic Surgery created a year long orthopaedic research fellowship. The fellowship was started to provide medical students interested in orthopaedic surgery as a career, a year long comprehensive musculoskeletal experience. The year is designed for medical students between their third and fourth year and is a blend of research (70%) and clinical (30%) experiences.

Fellows spend their time with multiple faculty, and interaction with residents and attendance to all education opportunities within the department (Grand Rounds, weekly faculty lectures to residents, journal clubs) is encouraged. Beyond allowing students to build their CV with publications and presentations, the goal of the year is: to provide students a broad exposure to orthopaedics to help build a solid foundation prior to residency, to learn how to conduct clinical research, and to build strategic relationships within the profession. Completion of the orthopaedic research fellowship guarantees a residency interview with our program.

The current stipend is $25,000 divided over 12 months. Applications are now being accepted for up to five positions for the 2020-2021 academic year.
