research
Just finished with first semester of first year and I'm looking to get started on a research project. Do
most people wait until summer or is it advisable to get started on something next semester? I have to
complete four months of full time work over the course of my four years but I don't like the idea of not
getting paid as I would with a summer grant or not getting credit hours as happens with electives in
fourth year. Does anybody have any advice??

Wait until the summer. You can get started on a good project during this time. Keep in mind that good
projects (i.e. those resulting in publications and/or presentations) will take much longer than the summer
to complete. Not necessarily because of work time, but the publishing process is very drawn out. It will
require a few weekends during 2nd and possibly 3rd year to complete.
That being said, doing research early like that is extremely important for your residency application and
can often be very gratifying if you put some thought into the topic.
There is absolutely no need to pile onto your workload during the 1st year courses.
