The Division of Adult Reconstruction of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins University invites all qualified, interested, and motivated individuals to apply for a Clinical research fellowship position. This will be a 2-year salaried position that will begin on July 1, 2014. This research fellowship provides a great opportunity to work with distinguished faculty in the field of adult reconstructive surgery. The short term goal is to improve the chances of the applicant matching in to an Orthopaedic residency while the long-term goal is to develop skill sets to become a clinician-scientist. At completion a fellow is expected to have the knowledge of all aspects of conducting a clinical trial from formulating a hypothesis to writing manuscripts.
The experience involves gathering and analyzing data, assisting in the study design, attending and presenting work at regional, national, and international conferences, as well as preparing manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Previous fellows have published multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals and have presented at Regional (Maryland Orthopaedic Association Meeting) and National conferences (AAOS meeting). The Fellow will also have the opportunity to attend morning rounds, weekly research meetings, and gain exposure to Hopkins and visiting faculty members during Grand Rounds.
Core Research responsibilities
- Conduct basic science and clinical projects on total joint arthropalsty
- Submission of projects to IRBs for necessary approval
- Prepare manuscripts, textbook chapters, posters, presentations, and educational videos.
- Participate in research meetings, seminars, journal clubs, symposia, and professional society meetings.
- Coordinate all research activities between the Adult Reconstruction Service and other specialties.
- Retrieving and filing patient charts, films, and other documentation, as needed.
- Patient data collection, analysis and submission of research data according to the protocol regulations
- Completes research regulatory documents for study sponsors, ethical committee and other organizations involved in the research study
- Manages the day-to-day regulatory/protocol maintenance operations of the assigned clinical trials

Program Description
This Fellowship is with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in the Division of Adult Reconstruction, at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins has been ranked number six nationally. The Adult Reconstruction Division is growing its research infrastructure, and this position will provide an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual. Research will be primarily clinical in hip and knee replacement surgery as well as with systematic program development. There will be opportunities to collaborate with the Johns Hopkins Biomedical Engineering department and work with our biomechanics lab.
Research Fellows are selected on the basis of work ethic, prior clinical research experience, and a keen interest in orthopaedic surgery. The research fellow will report directly to Dr. Khanuja, Chief of Adult Reconstruction, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and work closely with Dr. Lynne Jones of the research division.
