February 1, 2009

Dear prospective applicant,

I am pleased to announce a new Fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan.  The fellowship will be for one twelve-month position and has received Initial Accreditation by the ACGME in the Adult Reconstruction pathway.  Core faculty will consist of Kyle Anderson, MD and me.  I will serve as Fellowship Director and am currently Chief of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and an Active Member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons.  I completed a Fellowship in Shoulder Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center, New York, NY, in 1999 directed by Louis Bigliani, MD.  Kyle Anderson is currently Chief of Sports Medicine, Sports Medicine Fellowship Director, and Team Physician for the NFL Detroit Lions.  He is an Associate Member of the ASES and a 1999 graduate of the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery Fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, NY, directed by Thomas Wickiewicz, MD.  Adjunct faculty will consist of members of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery fellowship-trained in orthopaedic trauma, sports medicine, and hand / upper extremity surgery.

Fellows will be exposed to the nonoperative and operative treatment of shoulder and elbow disorders to include primary and revision arthroscopic and open reconstructive surgery for traumatic, athletic, and degenerative conditions in patients of all ages.  The fellowship will include a broad experience with a high volume of shoulder arthroplasty and advanced arthroscopy.  Last year, approximately 2500 shoulder and elbow surgeries were performed.  Outpatient experience will be gathered in the Beaumont Orthopaedic Center and the private offices.  The fellow will be required to complete one clinical and one laboratory research project worthy of publication by the end of the fellowship year.  Time will be set aside for the completion of this work.  The fellow will conduct basic research in the Harold W. Gehring Orthopaedic Biomechanics and Implant Retrieval Analysis Laboratory, located on-campus in the Research Institute.  Full-service animal surgical facilities are available.  In addition, the fellow will have access to a 12-station MTS total joint wear simulator that has been modified to test shoulder prostheses.  Fellows can practice new surgical procedures and technologies outside of the operating room in the state-of-the-art Applebaum Surgical Learning Center.  Teaching responsibilities will include the supervision of residents and medical students on the Shoulder and Elbow Service as well as direction of a monthly journal club and a weekly didactic shoulder and elbow conference.  The fellow will attend two or more national meetings per year.  Goals of the fellowship include the development of surgical skills in the full spectrum of shoulder and elbow surgery, contribution to the current body of knowledge through research, and development of a life-long love of teaching.  Upon completion of the fellowship, the fellow will be well prepared to enter private practice or academics.
